Historic New England’s Langdon House
John Langdon was a merchant and shipbuilder. A three-term governor of New Hampshire, Langdon was also a Revolutionary leader, a signer of the United States Constitution, and a friend of George Washington, who visited the house in 1789. It was also the home of the Black freedman Cyrus Bruce, a paid servant who was well known around Portsmouth. The Langdons were also connected to Ona Judge, who was enslaved by George and Martha Washington, escaped to freedom, was never caught, and spent much of her free life around the Portsmouth area. At the end of the nineteenth century, Langdon descendants purchased the house and restored it to its eighteenth-century appearance. They added a substantial wing designed by the architectural firm of McKim, Mead, and White to house modern necessities. The house tells the story of the early colony of New Hampshire, Portsmouth’s mercantile boom, and the Colonial Revival movement. Open for guided tours Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, from early June to mid-October.

Historic New England’s Jackson House
A National Historic Landmark, Jackson House is the oldest surviving wood-frame house in New Hampshire. It was built by Richard Jackson, a woodworker, farmer, and mariner. It resembles English post-Medieval prototypes, but is notably American in its extravagant use of wood. Succeeding generations added a lean-to by 1715, along with more additions in the 1700s and 1800s to accommodate different family groups sharing the house at once. Historic New England’s founder, William Sumner Appleton, acquired the house in 1924 from a member of the seventh generation of Jacksons to live there. Despite pressure to remove post-seventeenth century additions, Appleton limited his restoration to stripping off twentieth-century lath and plaster and replacing eighteenth-century sash with diamond-paned casements where evidence of the original fenestration was too compelling to ignore. Jackson House was also home to Isabelle Grimm Tilley, a formerly enslaved woman who lived on the property with her husband Jacob for nearly 80 years. Open for guided tours the second and forth Saturday of each month from June to mid-October.

Historic New England’s Rundlet-May House
Merchant James Rundlet and his wife Jane built their home on a terraced rise and filled it with the finest furnishings available. It was both an urban showplace and home for the Rundlets’ large family. Rundlet-May House shows four generations of family possessions, ranging from original 1807 wallcoverings and furniture to twentieth-century additions by the Rundlets’ great-grandchildren. James Rundlet equipped his home with the latest technologies. The kitchen boasts both a Rumford roaster and a Rumford range, as well as a set kettle and an elaborate venting system that services a smoke room on the third floor. There is an early coal-fired central heating system and an indoor well. The gardens retain their original layout with plantings that were popular during the Colonial Revival period. Open for guided tours the first and third Saturday of each month from June to mid-October.
