From stylish heirloom quality wool, to weather-friendly and extra durable materials, how do we thoughtfully select which rugs are the right ones for the rooms in our homes?!? The experts at Summer House Furnishings in Rye share the inside skinny with us this week as they break down a variety of rug options by material…

The first step in choosing a new rug is to note the room in which you’re looking to add one—the amount of traffic this room sees will play a big role in the rug(s) you end up with.

Wool is a natural fiber that is resilient, yet soft to the touch—this material is perfect for high-traffic areas like hallways and living rooms.

Lightweight and easy to clean, cotton rugs are usually less expensive, and are a wonderful choice for low to medium traffic rooms such as bedrooms, sitting rooms, and casual spaces.

Ultra-durable, water-resistant, and anti-fade materials make polypropylene rugs ideal for indoor and outdoor use. These rugs are terrific for high-traffic areas like kitchens, mudrooms, and sunrooms!

Made with natural grasses and other fibers, jute and sisal rugs come in a variety of colors and textures, making them easy to pair with many different interior design styles. Natural rugs are durable, but not quite as stain-resistant as wool or polypropylene options, which make them a fantastic option for living rooms and hallway runners.

Viscose is a man-made material with a soft, subtle, silky sheen, giving it a very luxurious feel. Viscose rugs are ideal for low-traffic areas like bedrooms, for example. Not suitable for homes with pets.
